Shroomies

2-Bit Shroom-em-Up Fun!

Shroomies was originally created for the Black & White Jam in 2022 by a team of four. We had a week to create a game based around the theme of "Death is a new beginning", while working within the constraints of only being allowed to use black and white for the visuals. I worked on the art, animation and game design, specifically the enemy design.

The game is a SHMUP/bullet hell that follows the journey of a grumpy mushroom fighting their way through waves of flowers. Upon dying, the player restarts the game as a new mushroom, with their previous one being reborn as a Shroomy (a lil helper that provides back-up fire and takes his for you). With each death comes progress, allowing for the next generation of shrooms a better fighting chance at making it to the final boss.

In March 2023, Shroomies had the honor of being presented at the GDC 2023 New York Pavilion as a part of the Mayor's Office Booth. Shroomies, alongside snapshot, were shown as examples of current CUNY student games promoting the city's in-the-works gaming pathways education program. In April 2023, Shroomies was accepted into RPI GameFest, where it was tabled alongside several other student games from schools across New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. At the awards ceremony, from the 40+ games accepted into the showcase, Shroomies won the Grand Prize for Best Student Game.

Due to the positive reception of the game, the team reunited in June 2023 to start development on a new, more complete reimagining of Shroomies. This version ditches the black and white limitation in favor of allowing 4 colors on screen at a time. The structure of the game is also expanded upon to include more rogue-lite features, such as upgrades between waves. Shroomies themselves have also been reworked, now being obtainable mid-level through spending mulch points.

Since restarting development, Shroomies has been showcased at a variety of events. Most notably, Shroomies was the featured game at the Video Games: The Great Connector pop-up exhibit from March 9 - 15, 2024. The game continues to be widely used at Gaming Pathways and CUNY events promoting their upcoming game design degree program as an example of student work. Development has been put on pause since March 2024.

QUICKDRAW

Rock-Paper-Scissors in the Wild West

Originally released in 2021 for Steam, QUICKDRAW is a simple fighting game that takes the form of a wild west standoff. Each round players wait for a randomly timed cue before firing, choosing between three different actions that beat each other out (like in rock-paper-scissors!). The game is very approachable, while allowing for deep mind games and reaction time tests between players.

I was contracted in 2022 to work on post-launch content for the game, specifically characters. Work on each character consisted of concept sketches, an idle, 3 basic attack, death animations, and two cinematic 'punish' animations (akin to supers or finishers in a fighting game).

The final character was completed in 2024. During my time on the project I had created 12 unique and fully fleshed out characters, ranging from ghostly vigilantes to cyborg dogs, to a lifeguard.

Reminiscing on 30 Years

This game was created for Clicker Jam Winter 2023 in a team of two. We had 10 days to create a clicker game based around the theme of Interdimensional. I worked on the art and dialogue, as well as on the game design and story.

Rather than creating a clicker game with the goal of increasingly incrementing larger numbers, we decided to create one where a smaller increment unit is more desirable. This gave us the idea of setting our game on a calendar, where the player wants to land on a specific date, and to do so, needs to proceed using smaller and smaller increments of time (years -> months -> weeks). The story is about a ghost who lost their memories and is trying to find the happiest day of their past life. To unlock smaller increments they need to collect key memories scattered across 30 years in the form of polaroids.

In March 2023, snapshot had the honor of being presented at the GDC 2023 New York Pavilion as a part of the Mayor's Office Booth. The game, alongside Shroomies, were shown as examples of current CUNY student games promoting the city's in-the-works gaming pathways education program. In April 2023, snapshot was accepted into RPI GameFest, where it was tabled alongside several other student games from schools across New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. At the awards ceremony snapshot won the Excellence in Narrative Award.

GBC Monsters

2-Bit Beasts(?)

GBC Monsters is an ongoing personal project that I've been working on since 2021. It is a collection of oddball creatures, originally drawn in a style reminiscent of the pixel art found in old Game Boy Color games. Since then the creatures have been adapted into other styles and mediums as well.

The origin for many designs stem from the idea of combining a species of plant or animal together with a manmade object or concept (seals + painting, embroidery + organized crime, etc.). Designs take some inspiration from those found in Pokémon, Dragon Quest and Earthbound, while the art is based on the color limitations found in Game Boy Color games (with most consisting of black, white, and 2 other colors).

There are currently over 50 monsters sprites created, and over 100 sketches for future monsters. Some have started receiving their own idle animations, as well as low-poly 3D models. I sell stickers of them online, as well as at events.

Wilds of Whisker Woods

2D Sidescrolling Cat-former

Wilds of Whisker Woods is a 2D platformer game about a cat lost in a forest, trying to find her way back home. Ruffles (the cat) can run, jump, perform a dash, and climb up walls. The gameplay takes heavy inspiration from titles such as Celeste and Super Meat Boy.

I was contracted during the Fall of 2021 to create the art assets for an early build of the game. My work included creating a tileset for the first world. It features bushes, flowers, trees, bridges and signs, as well as interactables such as collapsing platforms, chestnut spitting plants, and springboards. Additionally, I created the animations for Ruffles, the level-select overworld tileset, and all the UI and menu components.

Development on the game was put on-hold in 2022. The developer has however given me the OK to share the art I made. The images below are all mockup scenes created using the assets.

The CAPGRAS Project

"You're trying to replace yourself, huh?

This project is a music video created by a group of students led by Maxfield Bishop from Columbus College of Art & Design. The animation was done to the song Mr. Capgras Encounters a Secondhand Vanity by Will Wood and the Tapeworms, with the artist's permission. The music video follows the journey of a graverobber who gets in over their head and has to survive a gauntlet of wacky and deadly traps. Work on the project was started by Maxfield in the Spring of 2022, and was completed in May 2023.

I was brought onto the project in the Fall of 2022. My job was concepting, modeling and texturing background props. My work can be found in the graveyard scene, the truck crash scene, and the barbershop scene.

Lost in Sancocho

Uncovering a Lost Recipe

This game was created for Global Game Jam 2023 in a team of four. We had a weekend to create a game based around the theme of Roots. Our team decided to create a narrative focused puzzle game in which the player navigates computer files and folders in search of clues. The main character wants to help their Nana find the ingredients to an old family recipe, learning about the family's history along the way. Through reading letters, listening to audio logs, and finding ingredients, they get closer and closer to bringing back the recipe for sancocho.

I worked on the art for this game. This included pixel art for all the menus and icons, as well as 3D models for all the foods and ingredients found over the course of the game.

CN30

Pixeling 30 Years of Cartoons

CN30 is a fan art collection of 30 Cartoon Network character sprites. They were drawn to celebrate the channel's 30th anniversary on October 1st, 2022. Versions using just the channel's signature CMYK palette were also created.

I spent every day of September of that year pixeling these characters in my spare time. The characters chosen were to represent shows both new and old (as well as some of my personal favorites).

Gobi

High-Score Sewer Climb

Gobi was created for ScoreSpace Jam #19 in a team of four. Over the course of 3 days the goal was to create a game based around the theme of Parkour that also incorporated the LootLocker scoreboard system in some way. What we ended up with is a short game about gobi jerboa who fell down a sewer and has to jump their way back to the top. Watch out for rising sewage!

Our idea was to create a game where the main park tool was a jump that has to be charged before releasing, with the buildup determining the distance the character travels. This would apply to both grounded jump and wall jumps. The goal is to hop your way to the top of the level as fast as possible. Points are determined based on completion time, as well as tricks that can be performed and cans that can be kicked for extra points.

I worked on all the art and animation for the game. This included creating Gobi's sprite sheets, the sewer tilesets, the UI and effects.

BAP

Orange Cat Activities

BAP was made over a weekend by a team of three for Micro Jam 014. The theme was Urban, for which we made a simple game that takes place within an urban apartment. Use your moue to control a laser pointer and bait your cat into causing chaos. The cat will stretch out it's paw to BAP the cursor if it's close by, and will leap at it if it's far away. Any furniture caught in the cross-fire will get destroyed, earning you points. Go for a catstructive high-score!

Buried in Ashes

Horror, I Think

Buried in Ashes is a low-poly horror game developed during the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters as a part of the EGD Collective's Game Studio Program. The game follows a supernatural expert exploring the remains of a burned down family home and investigating the cause of the fire, as well as discovering the fate of its inhabitants. Explore the building in first person, searching for clues as to what happened. Partway through, a demon will start roaming the hallways, looking to eliminate the unwanted guest. Only after collecting all the clues and shining the light on the truth can the player defeat the demon and put the mystery to rest.

I worked on this project as part of the art department. My main job was working on the of the demon. This included concepting, modeling, texturing, rigging, and animating the character. My other job was style researching and creating guides to modeling/texturing low-poly furniture for the rest of the art team to ensure everyone's work looked cohesive. This included creating a few pieces of furniture myself.

ChronoCraft

Ambitious MMO Mod

ChronoCraft is a mod for the popular sandbox game Minecraft that aims to transform the game into a giant MMO-like experience. It is a large overhaul of the base game, introducing new mechanics, goals, entities, and more.

I worked on the project as an artist April 2020 to November 2021. During my time there I made textures, item icons, menus, fx, and concept art. I was also largely responsible for helping redesign the combat system from what it was prior, helping shape what has become the game's most popular aspect; PvP.

Ratffiti

Tag 'em, Kick 'em, Run!

This project was made for the October 2021 BrookLAN Game Jam in a team of five. Over the course of 2 days we had to create a game based around the theme of Brooklyn.

Our team came up with the idea to make a game where the player runs around a busy Brooklyn intersection tagging the walls with graffiti. To get in their way are rats that will try to destroy your work, cars speeding by on the street, and a timer that rushes the player to hurry up before the police get there.

My role in the project was doing all the texture work for the 3D models, which includes the environment and all the obstacles found within it. We decided to go for a low-res styled look to everything as it gave everything a very distinct look that popped out, while still being manageable to make in the timeframe we had. Ratffiti ended up being the winners of the whole game jam.

Dream Puzzle

Explore a Snoozescape...

This was a project for the Intercollegiate Game Network (ICGN) February 2021 Game Jam. The theme was Internal and External.
Our team decided on making a small exploration focused puzzle-platformer game set in a cloudy dreamscape.

The dreamworld itself is the "internal" and the bits of story that can be found by interacting with different objects would be the "external", as they would tell what the character is going through in real life. The player had to gather orbs and place them on their respective pedestals, which alter the state of on/off blocks and change the path forward. The goal is to have all 4 orbs on their pedestals, unlocking the door to the end.

I was responsible for the art, which includes the player character, tiles, and UI. I also did the level design, creating the layout of the map and making sure it worked as one large puzzle. The project did not end up reaching a playable state due to multiple team members having to drop out from the jam. All the art assets and level layouts were however finished.

Mercury

Temperature is Key

This was a project for the Level Up Circle May 2021 Game Jam. The theme was Temperature is Key. Our team made a puzzle platformer based on temperature and states of matter. The main character Mercury wields a giant thermometer that she uses to interact with the environment and enemies in order to solve puzzles.

There is a thermometer meter that starts at 0. Whenever Mercury defeats a hot enemy (such as the burner) the thermometer goes up by +1, and whenever she defeats a cold enemy (such as the flask) it goes down by -1. These hot/cold resources are spent on manipulating the environment, such as by melting ice blocks, turning steam into cloud platforms, and freezing puddles. They can also be used on other objects such as by thawing a frozen fan, freezing a button to keep it held down, or changing the air temperature in a balloon so it descends or ascends.

I was responsible for most of the art, level design, and gameplay mechanic concepts. The game is playable, but unfortunately not all the mechanics were properly implemented in time. As such the uploaded version is a very barebones platformer.

Splashalotl

Good clean fun!

This was created for Global Game Jam 2025 in a team of six. Over the weekend we created a game based around the theme of Bubble. Our team design a 2-player multiplayer game, in which two axolotl living inside a washer help with doing the laundry. They do so by running on the outskirts of the washer and shooting colored bubbles as the clothing being spun around. Pink bubbles represent soap, while blue bubbles are water. Once an enemy is hit with both soap and water they become bubbled, and can be collected into laundry baskets. Before being collected however, they can be hit back and forth to increase the bubble's score multiplier and score higher combos.

I worked on the gameplay design for the game, coming up with the idea for the washer and bubbling mechanics, as well as created all the art assets for the game. This included the axolotl, clothing enemies, bubble animations and their particles, and the washing machine background.

Frog Goes for a Swim

Go for a Soak, but don't Croak!

This was a game done for a Fall 2019 class project. The assignment was to create a simple Frogger clone in the visual programming software Clickteam Fusion. The requirements were to recreate the basic game using stock assets and adding one new mechanic. I took it a little further, making all the graphics myself, and adding multiple new mechanics.

Play as a frog trying to reach the ocean while dodging beach themed obstacles. The crabs move horizontally and are eager to get their pincers on the frog. The seagull flies overhead, and swoops in if you step into its shadow. The beachball bounces all around the screen. Watch out not to get squashed! Reaching the water and grabbing frog coins nets you points, and every 50 points you earn an extra life. Each time you reach the water the tide sends you back to the start and the obstacles speed up (Literal wave after wave!).

Tomasz Wiercioch

Hi! I'm Tomasz (he/him), game artist and CUNY BA graduate. Art and design have been ever-present in my life for a while, with pixel art becoming my medium of choice. In 2019 I began practicing my craft more regularly, and starting the following year began working on games! I've worked on character sprite sheets, tilesets, concept art, and low-poly 3D assets.I've gotten to work with smaller teams, solo devs and medium sized indie studios in need of art for their projects. In 2022 I had the opportunity to intern at Digital Continue in their NYC office, assisting with pixel art for their at the time in-development game. Since 2021 I've been a part of the EGD Collective's Game Studio Program, originally as a student, before becoming a staff member after graduating. Today I help new students in the program, providing guidance to those starting off in game dev.I'm always looking for opportunities to meet new people in the industry and lend a hand. If you would like to get in talks with me about a project, please feel free to contact me through any of the links on this page.
